Two community visioning events were held with residents of the New York City Housing Authority’s (NYCHA) Dyckman Houses to articulate a shared understanding of community concerns, desires, priorities, and opportunities in the study area. The second event, in particular, engaged participants to envision potential scenarios for an equitable and healthy future for the Dyckman Houses campus and its connection and integration with the local neighborhood, specifically with the Dyckman Street commercial spine to its West and with 10th Avenue and the waterfront area to its East. The discussions and exercises focused on physical improvements (infrastructure, new amenities, and open space) that would create an environmentally resilient, sustainable, and healthy future for Dyckman. Residents were also presented with publicly available facts and process that are public to date regarding NYCHA plans for an infill project on the Dyckman Houses campus.
Based on resident input and feedback, four key priorities were identified:
1. Activate Campus Edges
2. Fortify with Climate Resiliency
3. Introduce Sustainable Campus Infrastructure
4. Support a Healthy, Active Lifestyle
